Nielsen Homescan is giving you the chance to earn free gifts for scanning the items in your pantry.

The company, who is probably best known for its TV ratings, gathers consumer consumption data; what you buy can influence what appears on the shelves at Woolworths and Coles.

According to the site:

1. We’ll send you a hand-held scanner designed to read bar codes on items that you buy. It only takes a few minutes to scan before putting your purchases away
2. Then, once a week, the scanner transmits your purchase data to us (free of charge).
3. A large choice of gifts
   You send us your information: you earn valuable gift points. Those points are redeemable toward great thank you gifts offered in our catalogue.

Gifts appear to include items such as Myer, Coles and Bunnings, and electronics.
